Indoor-smoking ban takes effect April 15 2006 in NJ

Well I know that a lot of my friends are going to be pissed off by this fact, but me, not so much. As of April 15th no smoking will be the norm in all bars, clubs and restaurants in New Jersey. As a former bartender in one of the smokiest bars in the world, it never really bothered me and it was just expecpted that smoke would saturate your clothes and lungs at the bar.
But as much as I like this idea I do believe that it will hurt, at first, for bars to go this route. Although nothing is going to stop people from drinking at bars I believe that bars should have the choice to make themselves a smoking or non-smoking establishment. That way people could decide for themselves if they wanted to go there or not.
I think all smokers knew that this day was coming sooner or later. I say quit, it means more money for booze.

Kathy Lee's son Codey has to sign off on it first which is expected but whose to say that we shouldn't open our own bars in our homes...Call them a club, charge a nominal fee, and reserve our God given right to smoke like a chimney. Whose with me? I don't really care either way mind you...as a smoker, I like going outside to smoke. It separates the men from the boys. Usually there are a couple of smoking babes outside with us and it opens up a conversation immediately. Beleive me, this is the worst thing to happen to non-smoking single men in NJ ever...It will hurt them more than it will hurt the bars.

Thats what a lot of people say in New York...more and more of there dates are from people they met outside while bumming or being bummed for butts.
I guess i get more grumpy old man bars out of this at least...i might have to pretend to smoke to meet women

Oh and Gadfly, people dont want to be kicked out of basement bars because of smoking and curfew violations by the REAL owner...She holds all the cards and enforces the laws of the land with a mighty right hook

whoa, jd. are you suggesting that people be allowed to make their own decisions? don't you know that is why we have elected officials? for instance, if a nonsmoker wants to go to a really "hip" bar, he can't be expected to refrain from this urge even though he dislikes the cigarette smoke!! all the cool people are there!!! but now, thanks to our elected officials and our willingness to surrender ALL personal responsibility, decision-making, and freedom to ever more intrusive government supervision, he can be seen at the local hot spots without fear cigarette smoke. as an aside, i can live with smoking ban, and can see the point of it all when considering the health concerns of bar employees, who do not necessarily have the same choice in terms of avoiding the smoky environment.
